I updated to Unreal Engine 5.5, but building HLOD crashed

After upgrading to 5.5, when playing the game I would see HLOD are out of date rebuild them. So I selected that option, but when I do Unreal Engine crashes. I send the crash report to them. I hope they fix the problem. I am going to revert back to 5.4.

I created a forum thread: https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/after-upgrading-to-unreal-engine-5-5-i-get-a-crash-when-rebuilding-hlod/2132147

Update: I was able to search for that file that was corrupted or whatever, and delete it from the level. Now HLOD is able to build.

  1. Hey Andy, I’m having the exact same issue when building HLODs after updating (mine’s on 5.6). Unreal crashes with an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION during the MeshDescription step. I couldn’t find anything online except your post.
Do you have any advice on how to identify which file was corrupted, or how you found it? Thanks in advance this would really help!

    • Hi, I think what happened was in the unreal error message from building HLODs it output an identifier which could not be processed. I took that id and searched in the object tree for it and removed it. I have not used Unreal Engine for months. I am sorry to hear that it was still a problem, it took me quite a long time to figure it out.
